For a dreamy and unforgettable honeymoon read our guide to discover Island escapes for that all important and memorable experience to last a lifetime. Bali stands out for its romance:

  • idyllic exotic beaches
  • pure natural charm
  • historical attractions
  • secluded lagoons

And so much more. Let's dive in and see what we've found for you. But, before we explore those love Islands in greater detail, let's see what Indonesia has to offer couples.

Bali

Bali is truly a living postcard destination. Offering picturesque romantic dining and water activities perfect for couples who want to bond and explore together. From the Island's stunning landscape to exotic beaches with tranquil waters and delicious local authentic Indonesian cuisine, Bali truly is paradise for lovers.

Jimbaran Beach

Enjoy a romantic meal for two on the beach quietly enjoying the ocean view disappearing into the horizon. There are a number of high-quality restaurants on the beach front offering a candlelit table for two. Time your meal just right and you may be serenaded by the local buskers who'll sing pretty much any song you want. It is customary to tip the buskers afterwards, of course.

Uluwatu Temple

Bali’s Indian Ocean coastline is often a hotspot of activity for those looking for impressive seascapes. Rather disappointing perhaps but your experience of this cliff top temple will be more memorable for the relaxing tempo of the waves crashing below. It is said the rhythmic sounds release mental and emotional tension.

Tanjung Benoa

On the southern end of Bali, the water is surprisingly warm with a crystal clear deep blue hue. If you and your loved one enjoy activities that get your heart racing, then come to Tanjung Benoa for the water sport. There's fun to be found in all manner of activities including:

  • jet skiing
  • fly board
  • parasailing
  • trips on a banana boat
  • scuba diving
  • snorkeling
  • wake boarding

There is also a turtle sanctuary on the Island of Gili Meno, which has a protected conservation marine reserve.

Lempuyang Temple

Come to the "Gate of Heaven" as the temple is also known by. Walk up 1,500 odd steps to stand between the arches and look out at jaw-dropping sights. Nearly 1,200 meters above sea level you are in the clouds with the background of an amazing mountain range before you.

It's a little out of your way perhaps but believe us the journey is worth it. If in doubt, simply ask yourself why it is called the "Gate of Heaven". Set out early after breakfast with a rented moped and explore on the way, together, or take along a guide.

Conclusion

There are many sights and attractions on Bali for newlyweds as well as those couples looking to rekindle their love. The Island is brimming with activity and overflowing with natural beauty and hidden gems.

Hospitality is also highly regarded by locals, super friendly and helpful wherever on the Island. World class luxurious resorts with facilities inclusive of spa and wellness and exercise equipment at your disposal. Restaurants serve authentic Indonesian as well as a wide choice of international dishes, of course.

We're hoping that's got you excited. Because now we have reached the point where we can show you 5 of the best Islands within easy reach of Bali fulfilling your romantic dreams.

Nusa Lembongan

Located southeast of Bali it is part of a group of Islands comprising Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan. Come here if it's a slower pace of life you seek for your honeymoon. There is no traffic on this Island ― you move around the Island on bicycle or on foot. No one is in a hurry. Some of Bali's better attractions are found here with activities you can look forward to including:

  • picturesque village escapes
  • underwater marine life
  • explore the mangrove forests on boat

This Island packs a lot for the size of it. In fact, all three of the Islands are small, but perfectly formed, making them very romantic and idyllic.

Nusa Ceningan

This is the Island that Bali forgot. Rather rocky in nature with a 12m high cliff thrill seekers dared to jump off into the lagoon below.

Another beautiful piece of Bali tucked out of the way from the tourist trail. Visit for snorkeling and diving ― jumping ― and easily lose an afternoon just for the pure pleasure of the azure blue waters and nature. Come to rest and relax in one of the restaurants before calling it a day.

Lombok

A perfect island getaway to enjoy nature and just a short boat journey from the Bali mainland. You are within easy reach of this beautiful tropical gift. This volcanic Island has three main beaches and they are:

  • Kuta beach
  • Selong Belanak beach
  • Senggigi beach

The initial attraction of Kuta beach for you will be the myriad of bays with steep hills to the back of you, carpeted with lush rain forest jungle. Lombok's most popular beach is Selong Belanak with its huge stretches of sand and crystal-clear blue waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing, surfing and beach volley.

To the north of this Island is Senggigi beach which sadly has fallen out of favor with tourists to its southern neighbor Selong Belanak. At one time hailed as the "next Bali" it still has the dream waters for swimming and surfing and there are reefs and coral life, for sure worth snorkeling for.

You will also find Mount Rinjani in the north with scenic waterfalls and you could even manage to reach the top of this mountain for gorgeous views over the Island below. Close to Lombok are Gili Air, Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. Each perfect for chilling out and forgetting what day it is.

Menjangan Island

Menjangan has some of the most beautiful underwater marine experiences in the whole of Indonesia, without a doubt. The deep waters off this Island play out your fantasy of exploring for sunken treasure, for there is a 150-year-old shipwreck and you can see it all on a day trip out of Bali.

There are shrines on the Island along with the temple of Lord Ganesha housing a white statue of the god looking far out over the sea.

Gili Meno

Out of all the Gili Islands this one is for the romantics ― often described as "Honeymoon Island", the smallest and the quietest and most sedate of the three. There is your usual swimming and sunbathing activities and snorkeling, but unlike other locations dotted around Indonesia, you snorkel with sea turtles.

There's a turtle sanctuary on this Island. Scuba diving is amazing off the waters of this Island as you spot hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles and stingrays and batfish to name a few and there's the corals. What an incredible experience for honeymoon couples.

Note: It is illegal to touch and handle turtles in many parts of the world, especially within national protected marine reserves ― you can read why (and what you can do to help turtle species survive) here:
