Langkawi, the Best Summer Holiday Island That's Amazing

Published on Dec 9, 2022 • Authored by George Melyre

An Island archipelago off the coast of Malaysia popular for its natural beauty. This Island is famous for its marine life in the Island's coastal waters. There is a lot of activity in the water and out of it too, making it superb for family holidays. For sure you are not left feeling bored even if all you want to do is stay on dry land. There is no diving or snorkeling allowed on the Island. That's to conserve the natural marine life and coral reefs.

As a top destination, it's the summer holiday in Langkawi Island most people dream about. Come to Malaysia and make your dreams come true.

Beaches on Langkawi Island

While away your holiday relaxing on not one beach but at least three. Each one having soft sand and pristine waters. Grab a book, your sunglasses and hat and off you go.

There are other beaches of course. Pantai Cenang Beach is the most popular with a myriad of water sports and activities. If the idea of being in the water most of the day thrills, you then you've found your beach. But if you want to chill out and seek a little more peace and quiet then consider another beach:

  • Pantai Tengah beach
  • Pantai Kok beach
  • Pasir Tengkorak beach
  • Tanjung Rhu beach

The Pantai Cenang Beach is a tourist magnet for the water activities. The beach also pulls in a different crowd as the evening sets in because of an incredible sunset over the ocean. This is a beach for chilling out on, especially the sunset gives you amazing feelings inside. If we're being honest, this in fact is our favorite beach of them all.

Note: Not all beaches on the archipelago are public as some are private but those that are public, have free toilets and changing facilities.

The Most Beautiful Islands in Malayasia?

It's said that Langkawi Island is the most beautiful of them all, in Malaysia. That's undisputed, because there are few, we've met who would argue otherwise. But the fact of the matter is there are many other Islands Malaysia has. Our favorite Malaysian Islands we've holidayed on are compiled into a 10 most beautiful Islands in Malaysia list:

  • Lang Tengah Island
  • Tioman Island
  • Sipadan Island
  • Redang Island
  • Langkawi Island
  • the Perhentian Islands
  • Penang Island
  • Pangkor Island
  • Tenggol Island
  • Kapas Island

You may be spell bound by Langkawi Island but do consider the other Islands in our travel guide. Langkawi is the most popular Island destination in Malaysia, for sure. But we have a fondness for Tioman Island and Sipadan Island too.

The Philippines the same, there are so many Islands worth exploring. For your best holiday experience look beyond the much touted few.

Langkawi's Nature and Wildlife

Rural farming, Langkawi Island, Malaysia

Much of the buzz and thrill on the Island has to do with the marine ecosystem. The wildlife is set around four attractions. Each attraction targets those holiday makers with an affection for nature. That's shown very well with many attractions for nature lovers:

  • an aquarium complexes
  • a wildlife park and bird paradise reserve
  • an offshore aquamarine park
  • a mangrove geopark

The big thing about the Island in our opinion is the geopark. There are ancient jungle rain forests towering over impressive rock formations below. Hidden sea caves with stalactites and stalagmites. Tunnels await the unaware explorer and there are the waterfalls. You immediately see the waterfalls once you clear the mangroves.

Langkawi Island Cuisine

Food on the Island is consistent with influence from Indian and Chinese cuisine. Even if you're not fond of Malay cuisine on the Island, don't fret. The restaurants and hotels offer choice of menus, catering to international tastes.

There's no doubt find yourself strolling through the night markets. As the saying goes "when in Rome", it's urged you try the street food. If for no other reason than the true Malaysian authenticity. The flavors are much better than in any restaurant back home.

Traveling to Langkawi Island

It's not difficult to reach Langkawi Island. There are direct flights from Kuala Lumpur or even many a city found in Thailand and Singapore. Your airline may even have a route to the Island which has an international airport.

Other ways to reach the Island are by ferry, but they're slower. But believe us, you are best flying to and from the Island, as a tourist on holiday it makes more sense.

Pulau Payar Marine Park

Quite a distance off the shore of Langkawi Island. Rent a speedboat and sit back and enjoy the 40-minute scenic ride to the park. Part of the tour you can enjoy the sights of a very colorful Coral Garden beneath the waves.

Mahsuri Tomb and Museum

Much of the Island has legends and lore. Fascinating to you as a tourist on holiday but to the locals their history is very believable and real. We won't spoil it for you of course. There's a very interesting story behind the Island and its past about love lost and found. Go have a look, you'll be happy you did.

Langkawi Underwater World

A brief stroll from Pantai Cenang Beach you can learn more about the marine life on this archipelago. There is 500 different fish species found in the waters around Langkawi Island. And the same too for the neighboring 100 Islands.

The big feature of the attraction is its underwater tunnel. You see everything, which is an incredible experience for an underwater aquarium. As you can imagine the Island is super family friendly.

Wildlife Park and Bird Paradise

The paradise hosts around about 150 species of birds including but not limited to:

  • ducks
  • owls
  • toucans
  • flamingos

As you walk around the park taking in the sights and sounds you appreciate the nature. The surrounding environment created to fit in with the nature of each bird species. That element of nature you experience also includes waterfalls. You can also take part in the feeding of the animals, such as the racoons, the crocodiles and pelicans.

So be sure to visit during those times. We are positive you'll agree this is another family friendly attraction. Particularly for children, they can get excited about being so close to the animals.

Kilim Geopark

The park's waterways full of mangroves. It's those mangroves that protected the Island from the 2004 Christmas tsunami. It's easy to understand thus why this park plays a very important part in the Islands ecosystem.

The best way ― the only way ― to enjoy this park and get the most from it is by boat. There are tours you can go on or rent a boat, but you don't want to miss the caves and pools. Now and again, you can get off the boat and walk on solid ground once more to admire the forest and its natural beauty.

As pointed out earlier, this is an Island devoted to nature lovers. In this park, you can often see eagles flying above and diving to catch fish. Watching them is memorizing to say the least, such graceful birds. The agility is impressive, as is their size.

Mount Mat Cincang

Looking out onto the Langkawi Skybridge, Malaysia

There are some incredible views from the mountain. Not the highest peak but nonetheless still amazing. Look down on the jungles, the sea and Islands below in awe. At the top, on the summit there are beautiful panoramic views for you.

The hike may pose to be challenging for many, but the rewards speak for themselves. You will receive one of the best ever experiences this Island has to offer. Relax first at the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall. Set off again after having enjoyed yourself, on your hike. Give yourself about 3 hours at most to reach the summit. It's where you can also experience the Langkawi Skybridge 660 meters above sea level.

If you are not interested in hiking, then there are the cable cars which'll get you to the bridge much quicker. The architecture of the bridge makes it one of the world's longest curvature bridges. The length of the bridge stretches beyond 120m, which is extraordinary. There are incredible panoramic views to capture from such heights of the bridge. On a clear day you can see far, but on a cloudy day not so well.

Also, early morning mist hanging over the jungle canopy below adds a touch of surrealness. See the official website for further details:

Final Thoughts

There is a lot to take in on arrival and we hope our guide is the smooth introduction you need. Plan your holiday activities and get the most from the sights and sounds, Langkawi Island is worth it. It's a very family-oriented atmosphere wherever you go, every beach has great facilities.

It is possible for you to tour the archipelago by boat. By doing so, giving you the freedom of movement to explore all the Islands. The bays, secluded lagoons and beaches are fun once discovered. You pretty much have them to yourself, bar a few locals who don't bother you. Everyone deserves a rest and to "get away from it all" and we are happy to recommend this Island to you.

Langkawi is a tropical Island that makes you feel special, from the moment you arrive until you leave.
