12 Most Beautiful Lakes in India You'll Love

Published on Apr 10, 2023 • Authored by George Melyre

Ask yourself why you would want to spend a day trip to one of India's most beautiful lakes. There are so many of them, scattered all over this vast country, why do so many find their weekend refuge at one? India is home to some of the largest, most sprawling cities in the world: a lot of asphalt and concrete, noise and pollution.

When you live and work together with millions of people around you, of course you feel trapped and claustrophobic and you want to escape this. Destress and relax, offload your worries and enjoy family time. You run to the nearest exit and in most cases that's somewhere natural, with wide open spaces. For many Indians it's their nearest lake.

When you are holidaying in India, no matter where: Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Bangalore ― you name it ― there will be a lake within a comfortable driving distance. We strongly recommend you take a day out and visit a lake. Our guide demonstrates some of the best, most wonderfully beautiful lakes for peaceful tranquility, nature and wildlife. There is no excuse for not visiting.

1. Sattal Lake

As you can imagine there are many lakes close to the Himalaya's and one such lake is Lake Sattal. The lake is a brief journey, 26km from the village of Nainital in the Uttarakhand part of Uttar Pradesh. The village is quiet and little known to the outside world with a population running to a few thousand. The beauty of the lake is the heavy forests of oak and pine ― across the whole area, in fact.

In the locality of this lake are other lakes worth exploring, possibly as part of a camping adventure we imagine? Sadly, we didn't have time on our side but perhaps that's something that may interest a great many of our readership. Those other lakes close by are:

  • Panna Tal
  • Nal-Damyanti Tal
  • Hanuman Tal
  • Sita Tal
  • Ram Tal
  • Laxman Tal
  • Sukha Tal

All the lakes in our guide are set in beautiful locations. The colonial British loved the lakes so much they instilled a tea plantation in the region. They would frequently come to the Nainital area for it reminded them of England. Sattal Lake and its neighboring sister lakes have divine fauna and flora all around, it's escapism at its best.

The untouched natural beauty around the lake is what attracts domestic tourists in their thousands. Visitors can enjoy swimming, kayaking and boating on the lake as well as camping and lakeside barbeque. There is a great adventure atmosphere with activities also including:

  • rock climbing
  • rappelling
  • mountain biking
  • trekking
  • fishing

Superb for families. Nature provides you with hundreds of butterfly species to enjoy, once you go looking for them that is. There are also migratory birds using the lake all year round, marvelous for birdwatchers. Stepping away from the lake you will most likely come across the Subhash Dhara Spring. A natural spring hidden within the great oaks of Sattal it's a favorite among locals and you'll understand why when you find it.

Only 8km from Sattal Lake is Bhimtal Lake, which is also part of our guide, below.

Best time to visit Sattal Lake

Between March and May is the best time, and for those of you wanting a winter break, December is as good a time as any. You can really enjoy a piece of India's natural world going into the New Year.

2. Dal Lake

Floating Gardens And Village On Dal Lake, Himalaya, India

Kayaking on Dal Lake, Kashmir valley, India, with distant white snowy capped peaks of the Himalaya's

Floating village on Dal Lake, Kashmir valley, Himalaya's India

Also known as The Jewel of Kashmir, the lake attracts many visitors for its unique floating villages and 16th century Mughal gardens. But it may be:

  • the beauty of the Himalaya's being in the background
  • the beautiful green scenery of the Kashmir Valley, India's "paradise on earth" to many

Either reason is persuasive. The big pull is the houseboats for greater insight into the villager's life. The early summer months of April, May and June are the best for experiencing the blooming lilies and lotus on the lakes' surface. These beautiful flora gathers near the lakeside and when in full flower it's the best time to capture those sights. Take a ride onto the lake from one of the Shikaras boats, embroidered with gown and floral canopies and ladened with soft cushions for luxurious comfort.

Boating on a lake is a peaceful experience, and often silent, making for the most romantic moments for a couple. Emotions are only emphasized strolling along the lakeside with mountains facing you in three of four directions. Seeing the Himalayan peaks in the warmth of June sends a chill down your spine because thoughts turn to what winter could be like, at this altitude. Turning your attention to the natural beauty of the forests once more, any winter is quickly forgotten of.

Accommodation on Dal Lake

Many of those houseboats moored to the lakeside are set up to serve as holiday accommodation for paying tourists. It's our recommendation you stay overnight on the lake because a boathouse truly does feel romantic, and extravagantly comfortable. Kashmir cuisine is delicious, inclusive of barbequed Dal Lake fish, a specialty in the valley.

Getting to Dal Lake

Fishing on the Dal Lake, India during the sunset, it's incredibly beautiful

Conveniently you can fly direct to Srinagar International Airport and hire a taxi to pick you up from your hotel and drop you off on Boulevard Road, Dal Lake. The 25-minute journey shouldn't cost more than US$5 one way. It's completely feasible for you to arrive in Srinagar from Delhi or Mumbai, for example. Stay a while because there are some amazing experiences in Kashmir, besides Dal Lake:

  • skiing In Gulmarg, mid-January, into February
  • a golden meadow, trek to Sonmarg when in bloom during May and June
  • spot snow leopards in their natural wild environment

The best skiing is just 50km away from Srinagar, however if that feels too cold for you then coming to Dal Lake in May and June promises amazing trekking tours to valley meadows and national parks.

You can fly from Srinagar to Hemis National Park in under two hours. An incredible one-week holiday sensation awaits those who are finding themselves spellbound by Dal Lake.

3. Thol Lake

Thol Lake at Sunset, Gujarat, India

Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary, Gujarat, India

This freshwater lake looks more beautiful for its marshes. It's because of those marshes we believe it's why over 150 bird species call this home. The lake and its scrub-like surroundings are perfect for nature lovers and those who are seeking a great outdoor adventure. The bird sanctuary is best visited between October and the following March. To catch sight of the migratory birds then visit from November until February:

  • White Pelicans
  • Flamingoes
  • Mallards
  • Sarus Crane

And many more. You are coming to the lake for the natural tranquility and the birds. In many places around the lake are suitable picnic spots, and understandably why many domestic tourists come here in their droves. Just 40km out of Ahmedabad City the sanctuary is an easy journey to take, an amazing day trip we felt.

4. Pangong Tso Lake

Pangong Tso Lake, Himalaya, India

Less than 50% of the lake falls on Indian territory, leaving the remainder to China. The beauty and tranquility of this lake allows you much contemplation in life ― there is the perfect solitude for reflection and where else has such beauty so close to Tibet? Picturesque landscapes surround this saltwater lake and one of the world's highest ― at over 4000m ― there is no escaping how quiet and peaceful, rare in our world today.

One of Leh-Ladakh's biggest attractions and highlights. Plan a great adventure outdoors from May onwards until September for best, safest access to the roads.

Getting to Pangong Tso Lake

Different tour packages will take you on different routes, or you can go alone if you wish. The route we found most favorable was from Nubra Valley.

5. Bhimtal Lake

Bhimtal Lake, Uttarakhand, India

An Island in the middle of this lake apparently, is a famous attraction but why? Perhaps the temple could have something to do with making this Island a top destination, or the aquarium and its many species of fish. In any case, the lake is the "big ticket" item in our opinion: the lake and surrounding hillsides are stunningly beautiful.

Activities include boating on this incredible lake and walking along the banks of the lake. Completely putting you at rest, the experience is serene and peaceful. Ducks frequently will flock on the lake early mornings and you are encouraged to feed them. This is a great experience for young children; they can never contain their excitement being close to wildlife.

Nainital is a surreal location anyway, but the lake is their asset during the monsoon season, we were told. The lake fills up with so much rain, greatly enhancing the lake's beauty. On the other hand, for birdwatchers, the best time for you on the lake is during the winter months for the migratory birds.

6. Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake, Ganjam, Odisha, India

If you are a devoted bird watcher, then Chilika Lake is your Indian paradise. The UNESCO World Heritage listed coastal lake attracts a great many of the world's migrating bird species. Many listed endangered species can be found on this lake at some point during the year. Most of us won't know one bird from another but we can all appreciate a love for nature. And that's reason enough for a visit to the lake and if you want more (you are a bird watcher) you'll find more, in spades.

At one time there were a recorded 2 million birds on the lake at any one time. How does that make you feel? It's Asia's largest brackish water lake by the way. As with Lake Thol the best time to come for the migrating birds is from November through to February. You are near to the Bay of Bengal too which is another spectacular attraction in its own right.

Winter Temperatures in Bay of Bengal

The average temperature is in the mid to high 80's Fahrenheit, and it's the dry season from November until late February.

7. Pichola Lake

Pichola Lake with the City Palace, Udaipur, India

A city-based lake, like Ulsoor Lake. The centuries old lake is lined with grand architecture of the City Palace and other regal buildings:

  • palaces
  • temples
  • mansions

Bountiful forests adorn the banks as far as the eye can see making it a spectacular sight. Certainly, the beauty appears much more real and closer to you from any side of a boat. The sunset boat trips are the best. Cafes, restaurants and bars are nestled on the lakeside in many locations offering grand views onto the lake.

The lake has a lively atmosphere throughout the day and going into the evening. And there is no more an amazing sight than seeing the lights from the City Palace reflect off the waters of the lake as darkness falls.

Best Time to Travel to Udaipur

Udaipur is extremely hot during its summers with temperatures reaching over 100° Fahrenheit. To avoid the scorching heat, visit the lake and the City Palace between March and June. However, the winter months of October to February are considered the best time, actually.

8. Ooty Lake

Ooty offers some of the best trekking, Tamil Nadu, India

India's largest rose garden is situated near to this lake, one of the best honeymoon destinations found in India's south. All around are gorgeous Eucalyptus trees mixed well with dense pine forest, it's a location that is attractive all year round:

  • tea plantations
  • vast meadows
  • towering mountains

Simply hire a boat from the boathouse and enjoy endless hours on the water. Hire a bicycle and cycle along many of the paths with a picnic prepared earlier and on returning to the lake, enjoy shopping for souvenirs at the many shops. In fact, Ooty Lake is one of the Kerala's top destinations.

The number one attraction for tourists ― domestic and international ― is the heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway train ride. The 45km journey takes you down the valley, through tunnels and over creaky old bridges to eventually pass along the length of one side of the lake into Ooty itself. The whole experience from Mettupalayam has a UNESCO World Heritage site status to it and worth it alone to enjoy India's natural wildness.

9. Renuka Lake

Renuka Lake, Himachal Pradesh, India

Renuka Lake, Himachel Pradesh, India

India's hilltop lakes are amazing, they truly are and here is another example. This serene lake is hidden behind still more hills and forests of green. An excellent getaway destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, equally there is an adventure brewing for you.

You may consider it a little troubling to get there from Delhi with it being a 4-hour, 30-minute taxi journey, however it is worth it.

Hire a pedal ― or rowing ― boat and head out onto the lake, grabbing a piece of the natural world. Stunning views of the mountains and thick forests, the memories will last you a lifetime. In our opinion the top attraction of the area, overall, is the Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary. Many rare and endangered animal species call this their home and were that not enough there is the opportunities for trekking and camping.

When planning your Delhi holiday vacation make provisions to spend one day, one night, at least, near to the lake. Making that return taxi journey back to Delhi on the same day will tarnish your experience. There is excellent, high-quality accommodation in the area, with great facilities.

Best Time to Travel to Renuka Lake

Any time of the year would be a great time, except July and August, that's the monsoon months. Avoid the area altogether for those two months of the year.

10. Saputara Lake

The cheapest form of transport to the lake from Mumbai is by bus, a 6-hour journey. Driving is quicker but by private taxi far more expensive. Many of those living in Mumbai regularly head to the lake for its great beauty, gardens and picnicking.

Holidaying in Mumbai will afford you the opportunity to visit this lake and enjoy a relaxing few days in this beautiful natural world. There are two separate points near to the lake for the best possible sunrise and sunset imaginable. As with most of India's lakes ― and those featured in our guide ― the main activity is boating and walking. It's the reason why you come to the lakes, for rest and relaxation. And for nature of course.

11. Ulsoor Lake

Watching the sunset over Ulsoor Lake in central Bangalore City, India

Found in central Bangalore, it is frequented by city dwellers making an escape for:

  • fresh air
  • their morning jogs
  • an evening strolls
  • picnics
  • boat trips

Complete relaxation, away from the stresses of city life. In fact, it's ideal for everyone imaginable. The great thing about the lake from a tourist point of view is it is located bang in the middle of a city. On the outskirts of the lake are:

  • parks and gardens
  • shopping malls
  • cafes, restaurants and bars

All the modern conveniences. The 3km distance around the lake has many trees providing shade when walking, looking out onto the lake seeing numerous small Islands randomly located, is pleasing. Perfect for families, we are sure you'll agree.

12. Berijam Lake

Overlooking Berijam Lake in Kodaikanal Town, India

Pine forest on rock cliff near to Kodaikanal Town, Tamil Nadu, India

To gander sights of this marvelous lake, you will require a forest pass. Most tour operators will arrange this for you as part of any package or itinerary with them. The lake is sufficient in size and depth to promise you excellent fishing however you will require permission (as on most of India's lakes). If your tour operator can't arrange this for you, query your hotel to see if they'll do it. Some do.

Other than fishing there are no boating trips, those have been prohibited on the lake. The only activities for you are those sightings of many bird species:

  • Crested Serpent Eagles
  • Pariah Kites
  • Common Rosefinch
  • Blue Chat

It's an idyllic place for completely refreshing your inner self as there are few tourists throughout the year. The best time to visit this perfect lake and its surrounding pine forests is between October through to the following May. You come for serenity and solitude: the abundance of fauna and flora. Although there are few water-based activities, as seen on other lakes in India, there are natural wonders worth exploring:

  • Pamber Falls
  • Guna Caves

The Pamber Falls are located roughly 4km from the Kodaikanal Bus Station. Known locally as the Grand Cascade you must negotiate steep and slipper paths to find it but you are rewarded with a cooling pool. Around the pool it is blissfully beautiful, quiet and calming.

Guna Caves

A popular sightseeing attraction among visitors to Kodaikanal:

  • nature enthusiasts
  • adventurers and thrill seekers

Mist and fog cover the deep valley increasing your tension on approach ― it isn't named the "Devil's Kitchen" for no nothing, which only exuberates the imagination you create. Take the trail that descends from Pillar Road to reach the caves.

Traveling to Berijam Lake

Arriving at Kodaikanal Rail Station there are private taxis, they'll take you to the lake from there.

Final Thoughts

Almost everyone feels relaxed and in touch with nature when they're close to any large body of water or the seashore. It's nature's gift to our mindfulness and there is no escaping that therapeutic benefit. We are sure you'll agree too there are huge rewards for your family. When in India, it pays you handsomely to flee the city for a day, possibly two even, to remind yourself nature should be part of your holiday vacation plans.

And with such diversity and choice of lakes, India is one of the top destinations for enjoying a waterside adventure. Apart from the family settings ― the picnicking and boating experiences ― there is the potential for trekking and camping also.

Lastly, isn't it romantic to be out on a lake, just the two of you? Perfect for couples, young and old alike.
