10 Best Summer Destinations to the Philippines for Ultimate Holiday

Published on Jan 12, 2023 • Authored by George Melyre

The Filipino people are ultra-friendly and open to foreigners. In fact, their whole culture revolves around creating a warm and happy atmosphere for themselves and others. Often known as the "Land of Smiles" because of the joy seen on so many faces, there's never a dull moment in the Philippines. This modern society blends nicely with traditional family values, completing your escape to paradise.

Filipino Festivals

Philippines Spanish Colonial Festival

Festivals play an important part in the lives of Filipino culture. Almost all of the festivals will involve rowdy, loud over-the-top costumes and performances. There is an element of fun with a party atmosphere that begs you to join in and party too. And often it will pay you to hop between the Islands, especially during the summer months.

Every festival demonstrates something about an Island's uniqueness and customs. The integrity of historic traditions of the Filipino people are upheld ― including colonial influence of the Spanish.

There are festivals throughout the year and many celebrate an event that is specific to each Island and its people. In this guide however, we showcase our favorite festivals to enjoy in the summer.

  • Flores de Mayo Festival
  • The Pineapple Festival
  • Pangapog Festival
  • Bocaue River Festival

As we said earlier each Island will celebrate its own local customs and the Island of Davao del Norte is our first look into Filipino life. The first week of August for a week, the city of Samal hosts their Pangapog festival giving thanks for a healthy abundance of a harvest throughout the valley. It all begins with a traditional ritual and quickly followed with a party atmosphere of loud music, food and drink. This is accompanied by a spectacular motorcade with singing and dancing.

The first Sunday of July each year the small town of Bocaue the people recreate the crossing of the Bocaue river some 200 years ago. The procession happens on the river with a replica pagoda positioned on the boat.

If you find yourself anywhere close to Daet in the Philippines ― perhaps you happen to be there for the surf ― during the month of June then take a break from the waves and go see what the fuss is with the Pineapple festival. From the 15th of the month for 10 days the locals celebrate the pineapple fruit.

The festival raises awareness of the art and culture of the region and also gives the farming communities a boost as pineapples is their only crop. Enjoy performances by locals dressed in colorful customs dancing to tradition. It's an engaging sight and an experience you'll be thankful for having.

Throughout the whole month of May the people of the Philippines come out to celebrate their devotions for Blessed Virgin Mary and the glorification of the True Cross by Helena of Constantinople and Constantine the Great.

This month-long Flores de Mayo festival is an awesome experience. One of the most unique festivals actually as locals:

  • march, dressed as Biblical figures
  • recite the rosary
  • offer prayer and flowers to Mary

Once the processions and rituals have come to an end the festival finishes at a high with the sharing of food and gifts.

Filipino Cuisine

Philippines Traditional Daing Cuisine

Daing, a very common dish you will find anywhere in the Philippines and festival time is no different. The fish is first either marinated or salted before drying out in the sun. On each Island, Daing may vary meaning the flavor and texture also may vary. In any case the fish is served as an accompanying side dish or a topping.

It may also be used as an ingredient as part of another dish stewed or pan fried. Throughout festivities you can come across the fish presented on a platter. We suggest you enquire within about sampling the fish for the purposes of taste and experience.

Filipino Destinations

Philippines City Street

The first thing you notice about the Filipino people is their bond with family and community. Sure, other cultures have close ties with family but these people pull out all the stops to provide for their neighbors. It's a sense of responsibility and duty each has for another, instilled from a very early age.

Which sort of explains why the Islands have such a party atmosphere year-round. Because one more festival is another excuse for people to come together for song and dance.

Siargao

Siargao Island, Philippines

One of southeast Asia's best kept secrets. This tiny Island has amazing appeal as a paradise holiday destination, but few know about it. What is amazing are the white sandy beaches introducing you to hues of emerald green or turquoise blue waters. A haven for surfing enthusiasts, the Island is slowly gaining a reputation for its extravagant natural beauty.

Note: The ATM's on Siargao often will either be out of cash or not be working at all. Our advice is for you to take plenty of cash with you before leaving for the Island.

There are stunning beaches and coves on Siargao, and there are a multitude of caves. All waiting to be explored, and each promising a different experience. And were that not fulfilling enough there is the chance to Island hop, from Guyam Island to Daku Island, and Naked Island.

Guyam is very small. In fact, you may even ask yourself why you'd bother: you've seen everything inside 15 minutes. But it's an Island all the same so why not? Thankfully Daku Island isn't so microscopic. Actually, the Island's name once translated, quite literally means "big". It's the biggest of the three, anyway. You could happily spend all day here were it not for the boat pulling you away to the next Island.

Just be sure to grab a lunch of fresh seafood and fruit, before leaving. The food is delicious. The last of the trio of Islands is naked. A refreshing change you may think as there are no coconut trees or any resemblance to a rainforest jungle for shade: only a few plants and rocks. And lots of white sand to cushion your every step.

Back on Siargao, head out of General Luna for about ten minutes or so towards Doot Beach. It's one of the more enjoyable places to relax and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. And the sunsets are quite special too.

Manila

Manila Skyline From Harbour Square, Philippines

There is a sense of a frantic nuisance about the capital but it actually adds substance to your holiday experience. This buzz is centered around notable art galleries, sprawling shopping malls and a thriving street food scene. And it hits you all at once and it's really exhilarating. Once in the city you accept its history with a keen interest in learning more, and no better place to begin than the Walled City of Intramuros.

Fort Santiago stands out as one of the more prominent sites but what caught our attention the most was San Agustin Church. A UNESCO World Heritage site today, the original church built in the late 1500's has since been rebuilt in stone. It remains one of very few Baroque churches in existence.

There are lots of opportunities for shopping in Manila, however we recommend SM Mall of Asia for your first foray. It's our suggestion because the complex is huge. Beyond the shops and restaurants there is:

  • an IMAX theater
  • a sizable ice-skating rink
  • an exhibition center for concerts
  • amusement parks

And a few other things, of lesser importance. Arrive early and spend the whole day until late in this mall and head back to your hotel extremely happy and content. For an enjoyable day out of the city we recommend you travel to Calauan, about 90 minutes' drive south of Manila. Not so far away are the Hidden Valley Springs steeped in local folklore. Get to the springs through lush flowering plants and trees to be greeted with clear waters and beautiful scenery.

Relax and spend all day dipping in and out of the hot springs in what feels like a tropical paradise sensation.

Cordillera Region

Cordillera Mountains, Luzon, Philippines

Visit for a completely different perspective of life. Isolated ethnic communities scattered over inhospitable rough mountainous terrain. Although it is not easy to get to the Cordillera region it is worth it if you're enthusiastic about the great outdoors. You can challenge yourself hiking over the tough gradient slopes on the search for elusive caves and waterfalls.

The region as a whole is a combination of cultural discovery and outdoor adventurism. For views that are out of this world you must first scale one of:

  • Mount Pulag
  • Mount Ugo
  • Mount Ulap

Once you have conquered one, from the summit looking down below, all your eyes can see are clouds. You are on top of the world and that's hard to put into words how it feels. And you will still be hungry for adventure.

Vigan

Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, Philippines

The city holds the distinctive UNESCO World Heritage site status and strolling through the historic part of the city you reason why. The old Spanish communities and their Bahay na Bato architecture have been preserved. We were truly grateful for this, because our experience was enriched with the history and culture of those times. No word of a lie, it actually does feel as if you are transported back in time to the 16th century.

Narrow cobbled streets and horse drawn carriages are a common sight throughout the Meztizo district. The many museums and churches ― especially Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral ― should be on your list of attractions to visit as well. An astonishing experience to return home with.

The city is renowned for its hospitality and their local delectables and snacks. There are small cafes and restaurants on every street with some tucked away down alleyways. We strongly recommend you try Bagnet: one of the most popular snacks and the meat has a beautiful flavor and texture.

Moving away from the history and culture of this amazing city, if you are looking for an exhilarating adventure, we suggest you seek out the Ilocos Sur Adventure Zone. A 400m zipline spans a river between the towns of Santa and Bantay. The ride promises you an adrenaline rush unlike you've had in a long time. There is also rock climbing and kayaking among other activities. Take a 15-minute taxi journey out of the city, to Banaoang mountain.

Batan Island

Basco, Batanes, Philippines

The location, distance and size of the Batanes archipelago has not deterred the determined traveler from visiting despite the Palawan and Boracay Islands being more conveniently situated. The answer to your question as to why lies in the natural beauty and tranquility found throughout the archipelago. What appears to be a rugged landscape is speckled with lighthouses and churches. And there are wild horses, they roam as they please.

Direct flights from Manila to the provincial capital of Basco only. The best time to visit is between March and towards the end of June for the warmest weather, avoiding the rainy season. The Island being so small you manage to grab most attractions by walking to each. Or preferably, rent a tricycle instead. For reaching the archipelago Islands then use a boat service going to Sabtang Island and Itbayat Island.

Boat trips ― and flights for that matter ― are dependent on the weather which is why you should go before the rainy season. Itbayat Island is the largest of the three with open grasslands and favorable hiking trails for most people: nothing strenuous. It's a firm favorite for those who love exploring caves.

Sabtang Island has the only beach ― Nakubuang ― with good sand under foot having received international praise. Looking out from the shoreline you cannot help but be memorized by distant Mount Iraya. The crowd pleaser however are the shallow caves and archways found close to the beach.

Palawan Island

Palawan Island, the Philippines

Travel to the Palawan Islands before the end of May. Any later and you'll be greeted by seasonal rainfall. The hottest months are from March until June with it being cooler from December through until March. The heat can be uncomfortable for many, and you may prefer traveling to the Islands over the Christmas and New Year period: year-round, it's at least 26° in the Philippines.

Boracay Island

Boracay Islands, Philippines

It's easy to understand why millions of tourists come to the Boracay Islands: softest of white sands and pristine clear azure blue waters. And then there are the sunsets, which cannot be denied, are some of the most spectacular on this planet. In international circles, Boracay has competing against the best Asian Island destinations.

If you have fond memories of Bali, then Boracay is promising you a similar dream holiday sensation. Before you can enjoy this paradise, you must first fly out from Manila on a domestic flight. Arriving an hour later at Caticlan airport you get yourself to the jetty by bus or private taxi, for a ferry to Boracay. It is also possible to get to Caticlan from Cebu.

Note: You must have a booking with an accredited hotel before you arrive on Boracay Island. Without this booking you will be refused entry onto the Island. Check with your hotel or tour operator for this accreditation before making payment.

You shop at D'Mall which is an open-air shopping complex selling everything you could possibly need for your holiday. There is another mall not so far away but D'Mall will be the main one you turn to. The other mall, ― D'Talipapa ― you go to for the best seafood dishes. The restaurant, or vendor, will cook the dish whilst you wait. Both malls reside on White beach which is 4km in length and you'll find all manner of beach activities and sports happening:

  • swimming
  • windsurfing
  • paraw sailing
  • kite boarding
  • ziplining
  • cliff diving

There are also a number of spas and beauty salons. The cuisine is high quality and varied with local and international dishes found on the menus of restaurants. There is a nightlife scene on the Island for those who want to party on after sunset with bars and clubs. Or just enjoy a quieter evening al fresco in one of the cafes or restaurants.

Cebu Island

Heritage Of Cebu Monument, Cebu, Philippines

Cebu often can be the destination Island holidaymakers decide on, rather than Manila. As it turns out Cebu has a little of everything making it appealing to more tourists. There are:

  • waterfalls
  • hiking trails
  • coastal towns

South of the Island are the Kawasan Falls on the outskirts of Badian. Enjoy swimming in clear turquoise water pools surrounded in nature. A little out of your way perhaps but Dao Falls was suggested as an alternative to Kawasan Falls. From the town of Samboan head north on the main road for about 2km.

It is quite common to be accompanied by a local guide when hiking to one of the waterfalls. You won't have any trouble finding a guide: they're two a penny. Other waterfalls to explore include:

  • Mantayupan Falls
  • Inambakan Waterfalls
  • Binalayan Hidden Waterfalls
  • Aguinid Falls
  • Tumalog Falls

In our opinion, Kawasan Falls offers the best experience because the three tiers each have a beautiful pool. Jumping off the 15m cliff is optional, of course, but your guide will be encouraging. All the waterfalls require a small fee to enter and all require some level of hiking. When in Badian there is no doubt, you'll hear of Lambug Beach. It's an ideal spot to relax after the exhilaration you'll have experienced at Kawasan Falls.

Getting around the Island, forget about a taxi. Rent a motorbike instead, because the best attractions are at the end of a trail.

Bohol

Chocolate Hills, Bohol Island, Philippines

What is marvelous about the Philippines are all the Islands. When holidaying in Cebu we strongly recommend you also take a boat to the Island of Bohol. Purely for the unique landscape features that can be seen stretching away into the horizon. We are referring of course to the Chocolate Hills.

In fact, it is accepted that many tourists come to Cebu only for Bohol Island. The best time to visit is during the summer because that's when the grass on the hills dries out from the heat, turning brown. For the best panoramic views of the hills, we recommend you go to Sagbayan Peak. The resort can be found 46km northwest of Tagbilaran city.

One really popular attraction is the Sipatan Twin Hanging Bridges. It's a seriously scary thought when crossing the bridges, the light bamboo could give way underneath you. And you know the water below is really deep, with no safety net. You must summon all your courage to cross as your heart pounds faster and heavier the further you cross. Remember, there are two bridges.

When out enjoying your evening be wary of the crowds. Keep cash and personal items close to you and avoid walking in unfamiliar areas late at night. Use common sense to ensure your safety.

Negros Island

Manjuyod, Bacolod, Philippines

If you have been Island hopping your way through the Philippines, as you do, at some point you will come across Negros Island. There are rumors that western Visaya and Boracay have better attractions. We disagree.

With the Island propped up by mountainous volcanos ― some of them active ― you have the pleasure of hot springs. One such hot spring is a popular attraction, the Red Rock Hot Spring. Located outside the town of Dumaguete. The setting is very beautiful and peaceful. After rest and relaxation, swimming in the hot volcanic spring we suggest you head east on your hired motorbike.

Your interest is the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park. Roughly 30 odd kilometers from Dumaguete, you head deep into the rainforest jungle. You don't stop. Not until you bump into a pair of lakes, today but once there were leftover craters from dead volcanoes. It is a hike, even on two wheels it seems at times but well worth it. Both are beautiful, serene open bodies of water and you can go kayaking and boating on the lakes.

Our thoughts are to splash around and have fun. When paying for your kayak or boat, enquire about directions to Olayan Falls. Enjoy yourself before heading back to Dumaguete for the night, but do arrive as early as possible. The jungle trail can be time consuming, with the complex closing at 5pm.

When you think you're done with Dumaguete, not so quick. Off the coast is Apo Island. You're in the neighborhood, why not? Ask at the front desk of your hotel about booking a tour because that's the easiest option. A catamaran leaves the port at Dauin, which is 15km south of Dumaguete. Get yourself on it, for no other reason than to see the turtles. Your guide will know all the best spots to show you.

The price of your tour will include bottled water and lunch, and enough time to enjoy the Island. This Island especially is well known for having some of the best snorkeling and diving found in the Philippines.

Final Thoughts

Through Manila and Cebu, you are free to explore all of what the Philippines has to offer the foreign tourist. There is a lot of history and culture to explore: first the Spanish colonized the Philippines. Only to be followed by the Americans, after the Spanish American war. Some of the most beautiful warm tropical waters are found around this amazing archipelago. You know the score, surely? Of the top ten holiday Islands in southeast Asia, two of them are in the Philippines.
